About English's of Brighton

Among the oldest and most well known restaurants in the UK, English’s of Brighton is found in the city’s famed and fabulous Lanes. Set within what was originally three fishermen’s cottages, and with wonderful pavement dining too, English’s is atmospheric and utterly traditional with a touch of grandiose Edwardian styling which undoubtedly appealed to such luminaries as Charlie Chaplin, Vivien Leigh and Joan Collins - just a few of English’s infamous fans. Owned by the same family since 1945, English’s maintains its commitment to serving the finest seafood in the area with a special emphasis on locally caught oysters. Head Chef Gavin Leigh prides himself on using ingredients sourced nearby wherever possible and insists on sustainable seafood from accredited suppliers.

food and atmosphere excellant, couldnt fault anything, would recommend English's to anybody.

English's of Brighton is a surprising venue and very intimate - if youe at on the ground floor, you basically eat with all the restaurant. Great service, great lobster & mussels. A bit disappointed by the luxury hot seafood platter - a bit too greasy. But definitely go there for the lobster!

We visited English's of Brighton on Saturday night. We were disappointed that a speciality seafood restaurant didn't have a wider choice of fish species. We did enjoy what we had albeit rather expensive. The service was excellent.

Fabulous lunch thank you as always excellent serrvice

We ate from the set menu which was good value. The starters were simple and the main corse of grilled plaice was excellent. Overall a good choice of venue and menu.

English's didn't disappoint. The food was superb and the waitress who served us was fantastic. Would recommend for that special occasion

English's, Brighton. Not a great meal and service just OK

Cramped dining room. Very small portions. Very expensive. £52.00 a head for two courses and coffee?? Friendly, attentive service however.

We loved this restaurant, the food was really fantastic. The restaurant is teeny tiny and you mainly sit side by side with your companion, but that was part of the fun. The restaurant has lots of character and old school charm, the service was great and the food was delicious. (English's of Brighton)

On a visit to brighton I pre booked a set 2 course meal @ English's of Brighton.

This was a restaurant that had looked at many times but finances lacking it had not been somewhere I had been lucky enough to eat. The value for money was excellent and the food and service were great. Its definately somewhere that I would eat again, hopefully next time from the a la carte menu.....................

English's of Brighton - coming from the East End of London I'd describe the place as retro chic. I went there many years ago and the place hasn't changed a bit - that's good! Beer battered oysters were devine. Fish was fresh and succulent. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

English's is one of those Brighton mainstays that somehow managed to pass me by until a few weeks ago. Now I suspect it will become a favoured haunt, albeit primarily for those special occasions when you feel a bit flush and demand no less than the finest seafood (and a luscious rose champagne).

We had a vary nice meal at English's fish restaurant in Brighton yesterday. The service was excellent, waiters were very polite and helpful. The food was beautifully cooked and absolutely delicious. Maximum use is made of a very small space inthe restaurant but some guests have to sit side by side facing others across a narrow serving corridor. This takes some getting used to. Overall a great experience and one to be recommended.

Went to English's for a treat whilst in Brighton. Food was delicious and fresh and the quantity was just right. Waiters were friendly and very attentive, no music so restaurant was quiet at first, but less noticeable as it filled out later on in the evening. Overall a great experience, will definitely return on our next Brighton visit!

We both love English's of Brighton. Our fish was deliciously cooked, the waitress was helpful, without being intrusive, and the restaurant has a wonderful ambience. We cannot visit Brighton without a trip to English's which I think says it all.

Great atmosphere, lovely food. I had the split pea and ham soup to start which really was fantastic. Love this restaurant.

English's of Brighton - cute place and 2 courses for £10 cheap but food only average-good.

Unique - absolutely loved it.

English's of Brighton is a marvelous venue for a romantic meal. The overall feel of the building is lovely, the staff are friendly and helpful. The food was excellent. The only downside was that in these tight times it was a little expensive, but not overly so.

Good value restaurant. We were sat on a booth whilst we probably would prefer to have sat opposite each other.
