Very good in every way - good food in a beautiful setting.
On a Spring day, the setting on the river is pretty idyllic. Service is excellent, and the food very good indeed.
Food is not great but service, ambience and superb wine list makes up for it.
It always amazes me that this restaurant is never as full as one would expect it to be, given the food, service and setting. And the gorgeous weather.
The Cherwell Boathouse was a pretty little place just off the Banbury Road in Oxford. It's right on the river, so I imagine that in the summer of during the day it would offer beautiful views. However, since we went in the evening in February (Valentine's Day, no less) we missed out on these.
The food was good, but by no means the best I have tasted in Oxford. Service and ambience were good. Toilets clean, etc. the best part was the price, which was only £35-ish per person for three courses (no wine)... Quite good for the 14th Feb, I thought.
Ate at Cherwell Boathouse on a Sunday afternoon. It was a set menu, £24 for 3 courses, great value considering the excellent food. The pork belly was as moist and melt-in-the-mouth soft as it should be after 36 hours roasting. Apple and raisin suet pudding with vanilla custard was a gorgeous take on a homely cake-and-custard. Good food, pretty location with river views. Service was polite but a little inattentive considering that only a few tables were occupied.
Had a fab evening meal on a saturday when it was snowing heavily, so the restaurant was not very busy. Was recommended the steak, which was execptional. I chose a wine, but was recommended another to accompany the meal. It was a good choice but i didn't realise that it was £10 more than my budget selection (£16.50), so was disappointed that this wasn't pointed out.
Staff were very attentive and it is a lovely place.
One thing that always gets me with restaurants with decent wine list (this one is fabulous) is that they rarely decant the wine. Seems an easily cured oversight although the Boathouse is by no means on it's own in this.
I would recommend this restaurant, but would advise you to check the price of recommended wines or extras.
I dined in Cherwell Boathouse last night. It's now serving the winter menue which was slightly different from what I had last time. Again, the atmosphere was fantastic, however, the flavour was slightly below my expectation. The desserts were somewhat too sweet (toffee tart and apple tart), and the lamb was a bit too well done.
Cherwell Boat house offers a modern French orientated menu. Good choice on the daily menu with some interesting innovations: Hoggett spring roll contained minced lamb. Portion size rather dissapointing for my Pigeon starter and single slice of roast lamb main course. Extra bread charged at £2.50 - so not the classic French style bottomless baguette. All the food tasted good and the steak looked to be the best choice, albeit for a supplement. Wines on the expensive side but found a good Beaune.
Splendid for lunch. Impeccable service, accommodating and pleasant ambience.
We chose Cherwell Boathouse in Oxford based on top table ratings and we were not disappointed. We had to book for 6 pm to get a table at just a few days notice, but it was good to enjoy the restaurant during a quieter time, before it became much busier! Full moon over the river on a dark night adds to the enjoyment. But the food and wine were superb, and the service when ordering was particularly helpful.
My girlfriend took me to The Cherwell Boathouse for my birthday at lunchtime on a Saturday. We were allocated a table by the window overlooking the water and when the waitress was told of my birthday she brought us two glasses of Champagne on the house. What a great start. The food was excellent: starters very fresh and the mains were innovative. We had the mushroom Wellington and Bavette of beef, both superb. We had half a bottle of Meursault and a half of Cotes du Rhone. We had the trio of puddings with a trio of desert wines followed by coffee and brandies (3 of them) - the bill came in at under £150 including service which considering what we had, I felt was good value. It was fabulous. You must go if you are looking for something slightly different to a run off the mill event. Well done!
Cherwell Boathouse - Oxford
Had a business lunch here and although it was difficult to find at first, the food and service were both great.
Went over with friends last Sunday evening. It's indeed a nice cute restaurant in a quite place, with a cozy atmosphere and SUPERB food! We all loved the lamb and the deserts! I had apple tart and it was absolutely fabulous. Highly recommended!
Back in Oxford 20 years after finishing university we wanted to find a meal suitable for the occasion. One friend couldn't remember any good restaurants in Oxford so i took up the challenge and the Cherwell Boathouse didn't disappoint. Fantastic position even on a rainy Friday evening. Attentive service, excellent locally sourced ingredients, relaxed atmosphere and great company.
Cherwell Boathouse Restaurant (Oxford): Lovely ambiance, great food, and very attentive staff. A little pricey but certainly worth every penny! Perfect for special occasions or if you want to give yourself/someone a treat. Will definitely drop by again soon.
a really lovely setting with excellent good value food and a great wine list. The pudding - sherry figs and honeycomb was one of the best I've had!!
Imagine a French bistro transplanted to the banks of the Cherwell River in Oxford and you will have the Cherwell Boathouse restaurant. The decor, food, wine and service was all better than we were anticipating in a boathouse. Highly recommended.
We booked for Saturday lunch at the Cherwell Boathouse. Were running late due to a RTA, so rung restaurant and they said they would advise kitchen. Had a nice table overlooking the river. Food was very good and staff friendly. Would go again.
Cherwell Boathouse, Oxford. Charming young lady who seated and served us was just the right degree of attentive. Monday lunchtime, weather a bit gloomy, but I can imagine it would be buzzing on a sunny weekend. We really enjoyed our choices and I recommend the rump of beef with bubble and squeak and root veg batons. Support local enterprise, try the local Bothy Vineyard Oxford Dry. Was looking forward to pistachio sponge for pud, unfortunately no room, but will try it next time.
The Cherwell Boathouse Retaurant in Oxford, is in a superb setting with truly excellent food and service. The ambience of the restaurant was faultless and the menu choice, quality of the food, wine and service made for a fantastic evening. They were more than accommodating when we had to change our booking time and we were able to sit outside which was lovely. Situauted at the Punting station, the scenery was beautiful. Will definately visit here again and again.
Cherwell Boathouse. Excellent services. Good food. Nice ambience.
Cherwell Boathouse Restaurant, Oxford. Fantastic restaurant. The food was amazing and the service great! The choice on the menu is quite limited but what we did have was superb. Will definitely be back if we are ever in Oxford again.
The Cherwell Boathouse in Oxford is a great setting, and used to be a really special lunch place followed weather permitting by hiring a punt for an hour or so. Sadly our most recent visit was marred by the hike in prices over recent years so that it is now really overpriced for what you get. The fish and seafood is good, so are the steaks, but absolutely not that special. Sea bass was priced at £23.50 and rack of lamb at £24. No wonder it was almost empty on bank holiday Monday.
Very good in all respects
Cherwell Boathouse, Oxford Food was very imaginative combining unusual flavours to great effect [and it was the sous chef cooking!] Excellent food and wine list - waiter very knowledgeable about the wines. Great service - top marks.
The Cherwell Boathouse is a pleasant riverside restaurant with good food and service and an excellent wine list.
Lobster (starter) was slightly undercooked. Scallops on seaweed were liked. Lamb was reported as excellent: as was catch of the day (plaice). Desserts were imaginative and enjoyable. Good service and excellent location and ambience. We would certainly go again if in the area and recommend to others.
An excellent meal with first class service in an indylic location - on a terrace looking out across the river on a warm summer evening
Cherwell Boathouse Restaurant Oxford,
The ambiance is good and watching the punters on the river Cherwell can be amusing . The menu was interesting and well served with attention to detail.
But it was quite expensive on drinks
Cherwell Boathouse, Oxford
This is our favourite restaurant in Oxford and it never fails to provide a quality experience. The staff are extremely attentive and polite and the service is fabulous. The aubergine caviar starter is delightful. We had pollock, halloumi and chicken main courses, all of which went down very well. Top it all off with an irish coffee, they give you sugar syrup to sweeten to taste. Excellent.
We really enjoyed our lunch at Cherwell Boathouse Restaurant, Oxford. The food was delicious and the service very friendly. We will definitely be back again!
Beautiful setting! Needed a better variety on menu, especially for starters. Our main meal, rump of lamb, was yummy though!
Very good in all respects. Interesting set menu at modest price.
The Cherwell Boathouse in Oxford had a superb atmosphere for our very enjoyable Sunday evening meal overlooking the river Cherwell (funnily enough!). We were looked after extremely well, particularly by a French gentleman called Brice. We would have given a higher score for the food had the choice been a little more extensive.
Excellent location, excellent food and excellent service.
cherwell boathouse restaurant in oxford was beautiful, especially when we went. the food was delicious, although a bit pricey, but the service was excellent. Was empty when we went though, which was strange, but we were informed it wasn't usually as such, would recommend.
Cherwell Boathouse, Oxford. We booked on recommendation of friends, showcase Oxford food and life, especially the punting to two London friendsLovely food and service. Two large parties in the same room but this didn't affect us at all. The set menu was delicious, light enough for lunch and satisfying. The waiter didn't know the wines but went to find out the answers and vegetarian friend well catered for. We were very happy and will be bringing some Cambridge friends next time!
Cherwell Boathouse Oxford- good food great service
Lunch Ate on the terrace. They looked after us very well. Food all good, except the bubble-gum sorbet was a little too esoteric for me. My five Russian guests liked it very much.
Great setting, free entertainment from the real punters. French waiter excellent as are other staff. Food good enough.
A delightful venue with excellent service, highest quality food and superb staff, one of the best we have ever visited and not overly expensive either
The Cherwell Boathouse in Oxford was packed for Friday lunch, with the choicest tables by the huge windows overlooking the river. Food was delicious, especially the whole grilled mackerel (which still required some fresh lemon and salt, however).
Cherwell Boat House, Oxford. Excellent meal, with good service and some interesting items on the admirably short menu, including good vegetarian options. Some rsuprisingly reasonably priced wines as well.
Cherwell Boathouse, Oxford, is perfectly located and our table looked out onto the river. The atmosphere was perfect for our evening and the service was friendly and attentive. The food was beautifully presented and very tasty. The only criticisms we might have are that the beef was slightly under seasoned and the chocolate fondant was not quite gooey enough but these were minor details in an otherwise excellent meal.
The Cherwell Boathouse has a delightful river setting, ask for a window seat when booking. French style menu and some waiting staff give a relaxed informal feel yet smart without being pretentious. Previous comments on portion size are valid so fill up with extra bread and order some extra veg. Good wine recommendations, a nice Menetou and a flavourful, yet light, Mercurey were delightful and affordable.
An enjoyable meal.
